News

It is not surprising that tablets, including the iPad, have found traction with older adults. Their lightweight design and user-friendliness are especially attractive to those who see the benefits of this technology, are keen to learn, and are eager to keep up with the advances of today’s younger generation.

If your aging loved ones do happen to have a tablet, we’ve put together a small list of free apps which are useful for keeping in touch, accessing news and other resources, and keeping the brain sharp!

Skype: Skype is for face-to-face video conferencing. This app allows seniors to connect with grandchildren and other loved ones anywhere in the world. Once this is downloaded, add a few contacts so that Grandma or Grandpa can make a call, and maybe walk them through a trial call so that they see how it works!

Luminosity: This app offers games to help exercise the mind and stay sharp. The scientist-designers of this app have studied many common neurophyscological tasks, made some new ones, and transformed them into fun and challenging games! You may even find yourself reaching for a turn!

StockFish: Is your loved one a chess genius? This app offers the opportunity to play chess with online opponents. Difficulty and playing style of the opponent can be easily adjusted.

TED Talks: TED Talks is a large, easily-searchable collection of free lectures and talks by scientists and thinkers of the 21st century. Engaging and entertaining, these videos could keep any inquisitive brain satisfied for hours!

BBC News: Being in on the news is a priority among aging adults. With this app, your loved one has the choice of reading the latest world news or listening to the BBC World Service.

Install some of these apps on a tablet for your aging loved one - they will appreciate the invitation to be in touch with today's newest technological offerings.
