Under the direction and supervision of the Director of Care/Designate and as a member of an interdisciplinary team provides care to residents requiring nursing assessment, care planning, nursing interventions and evaluation of outcomes. Provides work direction and orientation to staff by assigning tasks and demonstrating work routines.

The Registered Nurse will also carry out his/her duties with a focus on the monitoring of resident safety and reporting hazards, near misses, unusual occurrences, accidents, and unsafe or faulty equipment/furniture to the Director of Care /supervisor/ designate.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

Understands, supports and implements the Vision, Values, Philosophy, and Goals of the organization.

Provides direct nursing care to residents in accordance with organizational policies, procedures and programs as well as CRNBC Standards of Practice.

Provides on-going resident assessment, formulation, implementation, and evaluation of care plans in coordination with Resident Care Aides.

Collaborates with the interdisciplinary care team to plan, prioritize, implement and evaluate care given to residents.

Administers medications according to established policies and procedures. Applies and change dressings following wound care plan.

Maintains records by documenting symptoms and conditions of residents, nursing

interventions and other activities. Reports changes in residents' conditions to Physician, Pharmacist, and / or Supervisor as appropriate.

Participates in unit and staff meetings, medication reviews, family meetings and care conferences, to communicate resident's assessments, needs and status to other members of the Interdisciplinary Team.

Plans and provides teaching and counseling to residents and their families.

Monitors staff work activities in relation to the resident's care plan, prioritizing client services as required.

Provides liaison with resident physicians on visits, through telephone, or fax contact to maintain current orders.

Processes Physician orders.

Assists with admissions, transfers, and discharges of residents.

Performs and documents InterRai Resident Assessments.

Promotes and maintains infection control program. Advises support service staff on infection control and outbreak protocols.

Reports risks, hazards, near misses, unsafe situations, incidents and accidents to supervisor / Manager / designate.

Monitors safety in the residents living environment and staff working environment.

Supports teamwork in a collaborative manner, is knowledgeable about the roles of other multidisciplinary team members, and is accountable for own decisions and actions.

Provides input into staff evaluations on an ad hoc basis,

Attends in-service education programs and staff meetings.

Participates in continuous quality improvement, safety, accreditation programs attends team meetings as required.

Maintains current knowledge and certification applicable to job qualifications.

Is knowledgeable about and adheres to all policies.

Performs other related duties as required.

Job Qualifications:

  • Graduate from an approved school of nursing with current practicing registration with the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia (CRNBC) or the Registered Psychiatric Nursing Association of British Columbia (RPNBC).
  • Current CPR certification Level C.
  • Current First Aide Certification Level 1.
  • WHMIS ( Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)

Experience:

Previous experience in geriatrics or long-term care is an asset.

Physical:

Must be well groomed, maintain good physical and mental health; be free from communicable diseases and be fit to perform above duties which include: standing, bending, lifting and assisting residents.

Special:

  • Must demonstrate concern and interest in providing quality care to the elderly.
  • Must be able to work in a co-operative spirit with residents and their relatives in a manner which demonstrates tact, empathy and patience.
  • Must demonstrate ability to communicate effectively and maintain co-operation with all levels of personnel.
  • Must maintain role model of good ethics and job performance.
